A place to unwind

Overlooking a stream and waterfall and set into a hillside, the ancient mill house has a sunny terrace next to a shaded portico with its original bread oven. The stream runs alongside - a few meters along a wooded trail, you can go down to rock pools in a glade.  Molino Meocci is a lovingly restored C18th watermill in a tranquil location in the heart of Italy. Close to medieval Umbrian and Tuscan cities and hilltowns, to great walks, wildlife and cuisine, Molino Meocci is also the perfect base from which to visit Florence, Siena, Arezzo, Perugia and the Adriatic Coast. A peaceful 20 mins walk to shops, bars and restaurants in the nearest town, the house has 4 double bedrooms and can accommodate 8-10 people. The house has 2 main levels, connected by a short internal stair. Each has its own entrance with portico/ pergola, its own living area, kitchen and bathroom; they are connected by a short internal stair, and offer an option of a degree of independence. You’ll have the entire house.

We love the beautiful hills and sleepy hill towns, the exquisite cultural traditions of the walled city of Sansepolcro, and the quiet discoveries of nature on the pathways of St Francis. Family life is slow and gentle here, and there are few overseas visitors, so we find a warm welcome is extended to us, and we are able to learn from the agrarian way of life with its rustic crafts and traditions. It’s a place for creativity, connecting with nature, relaxing and exploring. A place we love to stay each year, and we know you will find something to love here too.

Renovation of an 18th Century watermill

We are a group of 4 friends who have owned the Molino for more than 25 years. We were hooked by the mill’s idiosyncrasies when we found it derelict in 1989, and started the long process of bringing it back to life through sensitive renovation.

After a couple of years Molino had a new roof, drains, electricity and water supplies, windows and doors - and a new portico was built around the original oven. Slowly, it was beginning to be habitable. Over time - and many work trips from UK - we replaced beams, stairs, renovated floors and windows - and introduced kitchens and bathrooms. The old ‘vasca’ - or mill pond - provided the perfect location for a south-facing deck, which is now a lovely place for lunch.

The original outdoor oven which baked the bread from the mill is still in use, within the portico alongside the deck. And the original mill machinery - last renovated in 1767 - remains as we found it.

There is a similar mill in the next valley - it has recently brought it back to life as a working, water-powered flour mill by the millers family, who are happy to show visitors how it all works. See ‘Mulino Renzetti.’ More details of the mill and its renovation can be found in a booklet at the mill, or just ask us if you would like to know more.
